Protect Valuables:
Do not leave valuables in your car or trunk, beach or pool. Store them in your hotel's safe deposit boxes in your room or at front desk.
Close and lock all doors when you leave your room.
Avoid leaving itineraries exposed in your car or hotel room.
Do not display parking passes unless necessary.
Carry cash separately from your credit cards.
Keep a list of credit card account numbers separately from your cards
Beach tips:
Swim at beaches with lifeguards
Never swim alone; use a buddy system
A red flag means it is unsafe to enter the water
Never turn your back on the ocean
Be careful when standing near the shoreline or on rocks near breaking surf, waves can wash you into the ocean
If you see someone in trouble, alert a lifeguard or call 911. Unless you are an excellent swimmer, don't go into the ocean to assist the victim
Nude sunbathing is not legal anywhere in Hawaii
Driving:
Seat belts are required for all drivers and passengers.
Car seats and booster seats are required for children.
On one-way bridges, courtesy is to alternate every four or five cars.
It is considered rude to honk your horn in Maui unless you are doing it to prevent an accident.
General tips:
Smoking inside restaurants & bars is outlawed in Maui
Don't dive into waterfalls or unknown pools of water. Rocks are difficult to see
Drink plenty of water when hiking or spending a lot of time outdoors
If the water level suddenly rises in a river, drainage canal or other waterway, head for higher ground. Island rainstorms can occur unexpectedly and can cause flash floods.
Use sun block, the sun is harsher in the tropics
Anything less than 15% tip in restaurants is considered an insult unless the service is bad
A dollar for each bag for rental car shuttle drivers is suggested
Maui Time
Hawaii has no daylight savings time. Hawaii is 2 hours behind Pacific time. During daylight savings time on the mainland, Hawaii is 3 hours behind Pacific time (For the East Coast, the difference is 5 and 6 hours behind respectively)
Locals on Maui live on Maui time. It is more important to locals take time with each person, so get used to it, relax and enjoy the extra attention. If the car in front of you is too slow, enjoy the view. If a store is closed during business hours, most likely, the surf is up.
