Tips

DISINFECTANT: Use Hydrogen Peroxide on open cuts or insect bites and cover with a bandage. Open wounds are very susceptible to infection because of the humidity and climate of Hawaii. See a doctor if you have any redness or swelling on your skin. My husband contracted an infection which required hospitalization for five days and intravenous antibiotics to overcome the infection.

RAIN GEAR: Bring a rain jacket with a hood rather than an umbrella. It is usually too windy for an umbrella.

HAT: Use a hat with a chin strap or a fitted baseball cap. Other types of hats usually blow off in the wind.

JACKET: If you are planning on going to Haleakala or Iao Needle, bring a warm jacket. It can be quite cold, especially at the top of Haleakala.

STROLLER COVER: Use a see-through rain cover for your stroller.

BITING INSECTS: Be careful stepping into bushes or overgrowth where you can't see where you are stepping. Centipedes usually come out during rain when the ground is moist. Centipedes bites are very painful and may require a visit to a doctor. Also be sure to use a mosquito repellent when hiking in tropical areas.

CELL PHONE: We use Sprint and service seems to be excellent throughout Maui

BEACH GEAR: Snorkeling gear, and beach gear of all kinds can be rented here, so no need to pack bulky items

CHILD'S BACKPACK / CARRIER: Bring a backpack to carry infants on your back if you are planning on taking any hikes.
